Until very recently, Antarctica was a continent still accessible only by explorers and scientists. Having never sustained an indigenous population and seemingly existing at the edge of the world, the continent has also existed on the periphery of human experience. But with tourism to the Antarctic exploding, this ostensibly unexperienced land is now accessible by all. With centuries of speculation and the forming of Antarctic precedents from secondary information, we come to Antarctica as a people armed with expectations, some of which are fulfilled, some of which are not. Homo sapiens’ cultural and philosophical understanding of the world’s last true wilderness is just beginning.
