Once the primary travel interface to the German city of Berlin, Tempelhof airport ceased operation in 2008 amid controversy and despite a referendum held in attempt to halt its closure. Since that year, the space has been used as a center for recreation in Berlin and since the migrant crisis in Europe began to grow, was designated as an emergency refugee camp.

Whilst some have maintained their positon that the area could be better utilized, most Berliners have come to adore a unique feature of the city and an unprece-dented designation of commercial land space for recreation on this scale.
